grayDUCK is proud to present a retrospective of one of the cornerstones of the Texas printmaking world, Katherine Brimberry. She is Co-founder, Director, and Senior Master Printer of the Flatbed Center for Contemporary Printmaking. Founded in 1989 Flatbed Press, a collaborative publishing workshop in Austin, Texas, has become one of the premier artists’ printshops in America and an epicenter for the art form. Brimberry has always been an important collaborator in many artists’ work, but now we want to celebrate and highlight her long career as an artist.

Katheine Brimberry

In my art practice, which now spans over forty years, I am drawn to the natural world as much as I am to objects. I have a great interest in rocks, grasses, and plants that cover the surface our world and the life processes of birth, growth and death cycles seen in the landscape. I am also drawn to everyday fabricated found objects that on their own may not hold great significance. When I place found objects into visual relationships with landscape details, I intend to create an enigma. The viewer, who without the benefit of the history of the objects, is presented this mystery and can find and assign meaning. My underlying intention is creating images that spark epiphany about time and space, life and death, past and future.

In tandem with grayDUCK, St. Edward’s University Fine Arts Gallery will present a retrospective view of Katherine Brimberry’s collaborative work. A selection of prints from artists who have worked with the Senior Master Printer will be on view in the Fine Arts Gallery. [The Big Dance: Printmaking Collaborations Opening: Friday, August 30, 6-9pm. St. Edward’s University 3001 S. Congress Ave].

These two shows come ahead of a soon-to-be released documentary on Katherine Brimberry’s prolific career.
