FoundBirdcage Film Club screening Universal Language (directed by Canadian filmmaker Matthew Rankin, 2025)

December 9, 2025 7:30pm

FoundBirdcage Film Club is back! And we are thrilled to announce that our DIY film screening series has found a new partner and home: grayDUCK, the acclaimed East Austin art gallery, known for showing some of the most interesting work in town.

So - welcome to FB@GD, a monthly film screening series that will blow your mind with contemporary, boundary-pushing, arthouse films from around the world. Films that you will definitely never have heard of - and that's the point! While many of us lament the enshittification of movies these days, we are here to report that there are still surprisingly great, innovative films hiding in the hinterworld.

At FB@GD we embrace the strange, the experimental, the unseen.

Plus, there's wine and beer! Also, conversations will happen, as each screening will be followed by a quick, fun discussion.

Please join us for our debut screening on Tuesday, December the 9th!

Universal Language

Universal Language (directed by Canadian filmmaker Matthew Rankin, 2025) is truly one of the most absurdly funny and inventive films of the past decade. Set in a city that is a surreal mash-up of Tehran and Winnepeg, the tryptych features a lost soul, an angry teacher, a tour guide, two young students, and a turkey who likes to steal eyeglasses.

"These apparently disparate stories often cross paths in surprising ways, but nothing in 'Universal Language' feels remotely predictable. It is a world that’s familiar and strange to us, welcoming but odd, funny, and tender." - Roger Ebert dot com
